My Tarot Card Reading Experience

So, I’ve decided to start learning how to use tarot cards, as I’ve always fancied myself as a bit of a psychic. My neighbour (also a close family friend) has done tarot card reading for years and she bought my mum a set a while ago, but my mum isn’t really into anything like that – so I thought I’d give it ago! But first, I asked my neighbour if she could read my cards, seeing as I’d never had a reading before. I was actually very shocked by how accurate everything was.

There are different ways of ordering tarot cards, such as, the Celtic Cross spread, but my neighbour has resorted to doing her own spread: closing her eyes and leaving it to the external forces to decide. After she had shuffled the cards, she placed them in particular groups around the table, still unaware of what cards they were. In total she had placed thirteen cards: a group of five, a group of four, a group of three and then a group of one card placed at the top of the table.

The card on its own, and the first card turned face-up, was the Princess of Wands.
The description of this card is ‘This Princess of the Palace of Fire is enthusiastic and courageous, with auburn hair and impulsive in either love or anger. She can be blunt to the point of being tactless. Her enthusiasm can be short-lived, which makes for a certain amount of instability as the energetic speed of the moment may dissipate and seem to suddenly reverse into anger or theatrics’ and so on… The description of this young girl on the card was an uncanny resemblance to myself I actually laughed. It was 100% exact from the temperamental interior to the auburn haired, young exterior. The fact that my reader had placed this card on its own, above the rest of the cards and turned it over first was very strange and most definitely heightened my belief in a supernatural dimension.

The remaining twelve cards were (in no particular order):
The Emperor
Eight of Pentacles
Queen of Pentacles
Four of Pentacles

Strength
Justice
Prince of Wands
Five of Wands
Seven of Wands
Five of Pentacles
Ten of Pentacles
Six of Swords

One card that explained my mental state with great accuracy was the ‘Five of Wands’. This card represents competition, displaying a picture of two men fighting each other. I interpreted this as me fighting with myself, which I tend to do a lot. I think this card represented my indecisive nature perfectly.
The meaning of a lot of these cards indicated that I am going to be changing residence soon and that my journey would be very difficult, but worth it in the end.

I found this was definitely referring to my recent decision of taking a gap year before uni and emigrating to Australia for a year. I am very enthusiastic about this trip and cannot wait, but I am also extremely worried about living literally the other side of the world from my family. I unfortunately don’t possess much independence and rely on my mum for almost everything. The thought of not seeing her for a year makes me feel sick with dread, but I also think that if I don’t do this I will never ‘grow up’. Another thing that frightens me tremendously is that this move symbolizes a definite transfer from adolescence to adulthood, as once I come back to England I will go straight to university. After this four year journey I will be twenty-two, a grown woman with my own life and I am very fearful of growing up and fleeing the nest. Not only will it be tough on me mentally, but financially this is going to clean me out – despite all of this I am adamant on going.

The very last card was the ‘Six of Swords’ which showed a young man on a boat. The description of this card was ‘Moving away from turbulent seas into calmer waters. It’s passengers are arriving at a safe haven. Their attitudes are relaxed and they can now look back fondly of their past efforts knowing that the hardships have made them stronger and wiser. The difficulties encountered could not have been avoided. They had to be faced and dealt with before life could proceed in a fulfilling way’.

I saw this card as telling me that moving to Australia will be a step in the right direction. The turbulent seas definitely represent my life as of now, and my hardships of leaving my family and saving up will all be worth the pain and trouble because ‘they have to be faced before life can proceed in a fulfilling way’.

After this reading my not-so-sure attitude towards the supernatural manner of tarot cards has been converted. I definitely feel that there was an external force behind this reading, and I feel more inclined to learn how to do this myself. Everybody should have the experience of tarot card reading, because if it doesn’t open your eyes to the past, present or future, then the least you will get out of it is a beautiful story.

The book I used descriptions from was ‘The Enchanted Tarot’ by Amy Zerner & Monte Farber
